Cody Ryan Military - Loved ones are remembering the Newark native's life after he died in a crash in California last week.

Cody Ryan, 33, died in the crash on Saturday, according to a GoFundMe page set up to benefit his family.

Ryan was a 2007 graduate of Licking Valley High School and was a standout basketball player for the district, according to the school's basketball team.

His obituary said he served in the United States Marine Corps from 2008 until earlier this year. During his service he was stationed at several military bases and served in several organizations. He also served in the Marine Corps Special Operations Command and most recently commanded in Iraq.

On the Licking Valley basketball program's Facebook post, Ryan was described as "larger than life" and a fearless competitor. After returning to normal, Ryan led the Panthers to the Mid-State League-Ohio Division championship in 2007, when he hit the game-winning shot with seconds left on the clock.

Friend and MARSOC teammate Christopher Nicoll described Ryan as very funny, with a big personality and a big heart.

"He always has a joke. He always has a riddle. Until then, it's always a bad idea," Nichol said.

Nicole expressed her gratitude to Ryan, who organized a fundraiser for his family last year after Nicole was in a bad car accident.

"When I was in the hospital and they were putting me to sleep, Cody reached out to my family and got me a fundraiser to help pay the medical bills," Nicole said, adding that Ryan also sent his daughter a birthday gift. It was a birthday. A few days after his accident.

One of Ryan's special operations team members set up a GoFundMe account to help his family cover their 4-year-old son's immediate needs and funeral expenses. The money will also be used to fund Ryan's son's college.
